Physical controls on the storage and movement of water in soils are examined to identify the constraints to plants using soils to store indensed water.
Dryland Salinity

Rebuttal to the Return of the RGM for Dryland Salinity
Examines the applicability of recent publications that extend the rising groundwater model (RGM) previously applied to dryland salinity from surficial aquifers to include deep aquifers used for water production. Separate correlations between rainfall and bore water levels and the extent of dryland salinity were used to draw the conclusion that dryland salinity is mainly due to change in climate rather than land use. The validity of this conclusion is examined to demonstrate that it cannot apply.

A positive feedback mechanism is identified whereby the development of vegetation depends on its level of development. The implications for land use impacts such as global warming are identified.
Shrub Encroachment in Woodlands
Around 40 years of observations are summarised to identify how woodlands develop and function, and how they respond to land use impacts. Key deficiencies in knowledge are identified.

Implications of Indensation for Agriculture
The general functioning of the soil-plant system is considered by way of the relationships between plants and soil microbes. Water and nutrients are addressed, focusing on the supply of water and production of new nutrients essential for the system to develop and survive. The discussion addresses implications for human population levels, and constraints to research and implementation that currently limit the development of sustainable agricultural systems.
