Company Director and Environmental Scientist

Interests: Innovations in resource sustainability.

Experience: Rob is the Managing Director of Environmental Research and Information Consortium Pty Ltd (ERIC) and a principal environmental scientist specialising in resource assessment and management. This includes 23 years consultancy background in policy development, corporate planning, business analysis and program evaluation, information system's design and resource management in the public sector.

ERIC is a leader and award winner in natural resource R&D, innovation and application of new techniques in the use of remotely sensed data in resource mapping for environmental, economic and social assessment. This included world leading techniques in the use of airborne radiometric data for mapping soil properties, ie. salinity and groundwater exploration.

Rob has extensive experience in environmental assessment, including the issues of economics, society, ecology, hydrology, climate, soils, vegetation and fauna, microbial balancing of soil and water and bio-conversion in waste management. This experience includes the preparation of resource management plans for all levels of government and corporations. He also has considerable experience in regional development, enterprise site selection and the role of local government in environmental planning and management. He has received a number of awards and honours for research and development and innovation for environmental information technologies, particularly in the application of geophysical data for mapping earth resources.

Dr Brian Tunstall (B.Sc, PhD)
Brian Tunstall has been a Director of ERIC since 1997. He previously had 26 years as a research scientist in CSIRO (Land and Water) where he conducted extensive environmental research, primarily directed at providing support for the management of Defence training lands. Brian's research topics included plant community and water relations, effects of grazing, tree killing and fire on vegetation and soils and vegetation mapping using remotely sensed data. He also specialised in impact assessment, environmental monitoring, catchment outflows analysis, soil mapping using airborne measurers of gamma radiation, and land management planning. Brian has extensive experience in assessing land use needs and providing cost effective solutions that meet social as well as economic objectives. He has been instrumental in developing ERIC's research base through his solid understanding of client needs, and knowledge of remote sensing technologies. Brian has developed ERIC's unique approaches to mapping vegetation, soils, hydrology and climate, and provide expert witness support on these areas for legal proceedings.
